The First Congregational Church is an historic red brick New England church - 200+ years old – and is located in a village area about six miles from Keene, NH.
Swanzey, NH is where the play, The Old Homestead, by the playwright Denman Thompson (1833-1911) continues to be presented outdoors for a week-end each July in the town's Potash Bowl. The play was very popular when first produced where it played on Broadway then toured this country and Europe. In England, a Command Performance was presented for Queen Victoria. and Swanzey residents have acted in the play since the beginning! Denman Thompson was born in Pennsylvania but grew up in Swanzey. Although his acting and travels took him away he maintained his home in Swanzey.
DIRECTIONS TO THE 2008 REUNION
The First Congregational Church of Swanzey If you are coming from Vermont or northwest New Hampshire on Route 91, in Brattleboro,VT, take the exit for Route 9 East to Keene, NH.
If you are driving from the north, south, or east, take whichever convenient highway leads to Keene, NH.
Directions from Keene to the Reunion site
In Keene, at the intersection of Routes 101 and 12, turn south onto Route 12. Go one mile, then turn right onto Route 32. Follow this Route for 3 1/2 miles.
At the beginning of Route 32, a small airport will be on the right and a short distance further will be Wilson Pond on the left. As you near the church, you will pass a high school on the left and an elementary school on the right. At the intersection just beyond the schools, bear left staying on Route 32. A little further on, the brick church is on the right. Parking is in the church yard.
