Swanzey, NH is where the play, The Old Homestead, by the playwright Denman Thompson (1833-1911) continues to be presented outdoors for a week-end each July in the town's Potash Bowl.  The play was very popular when first produced where it played on Broadway  then toured this country and Europe. In England, a Command Performance was presented for Queen Victoria. and Swanzey residents have acted in the play since the beginning!  Denman Thompson was born in Pennsylvania but grew up in Swanzey. Although his acting and travels took him away he maintained his home in Swanzey.
